Bluegrass United Academic Center Electives

A Program of Bluegrass United

The BUAC Electives Program 2009-2010

The electives and core classes offered at BUAC are two separate BU programs that work closely together for the convenience of BU families. Although operating policies are similar, the core and elective programs are run by two different committees. For that reason, BU families must fill out two sets of paperwork if they have children in both the electives program and the core program.

The BUAC Electives Program gives students the opportunity to take classes in their area of interest and add to their high school transcripts/portfolios with extra-curricular activities and academic courses that are viewed positively by college admission officers. Most elective courses are designed to be hands-on and/or cooperative in nature (discussion based), giving homeschool students the opportunity to gain desired academic experiences difficult to achieve in the home setting. Occasionally, lecture classes are offered that feature difficult subject matter and/or exceptional teachers.

Features of the 2009-2010 BUAC Electives Program include:

  • Tuition: $110 per student per semester (No registration fee) Tuition is refundable up to Aug. 1.
  • Facility Fee: $10 This fee is collected to purchase insurance and address other costs related to the facility.
  • Courses are offered between noon and 4 p.m. on Thursdays at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church.
  • Students pay one fee and may choose up to three courses per semester from the electives schedule. Students are encouraged, but not required, to take three courses per semester. The tuition remains the same despite the number of elective classes chosen.
  • Students are offered the opportunity to pick up a fourth elective for $30 per semester after late registration is completed. The open electives are announced via email prior to the BUAC Electives Kickoff.
  • Study halls are offered at no charge for students with "free" periods. However, students may only take one study hall. If enrollment drops below three classes, students must make arrangements to not be on site for more than one study hall.
  • Electives students may eat lunch at BUAC. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for students needing to eat lunch on site. Students bring their own lunches to BUAC Electives.
  • BUAC first hour classes begin at 12:05. The remaining classes begin at 1:05, 2:05 and 3:05.
  • BUAC Electives provides the service of collecting electives tuition and getting it to instructors. However, families are ultimately responsible for the approval of  instructors and their courses.
  • Although each teacher sets his/her own objectives for the class, the expectation for out-of-class work is not significant.
  • Students are required to meet the rules and expectations of elective teachers and leadership. Those students not fulfilling the requirements of the class will be asked to give up their positions in the class.
  • Elective classes are taught by experienced teachers, most with extensive experience and training in the subject area. Occasionally, exceptional teachers are asked to teach classes outside of their subject areas.
  • Ninth grade students are required to take the  Freshman Foundations course as one of their three electives for fall semester.
  • The popularity and necessity of elective courses are evaluated year-to-year. BUAC Electives attempts to offer its most popular courses in repeating years.  However, students who strongly desire or need a specific course are encouraged to take that course as early in his/her high school career as possible as it may not be offered in future years.
  • For specific information regarding elective classes, such as content and expectations for students, families should email the teacher directly.
  • Elective classes meet for two 16-week semesters.
  • High school credit should be assigned to each course taken, but the amount of credit earned for each class is up to the discretion of the parent.
  • Grades are not given for electives courses except on request of the student. If the student would like a teacher to issue a written grade, he/she must submit a form for the teacher to fill out.
  • Each family is required to volunteer on a limited basis at BUAC to assist with the operation of the electives program. Other opportunities for service are available and will be shared as the needs arise.
  • BUAC has been designed for homeschooling families. Students new to homeschooling must submit to an interview/application process in order to enroll in BUAC Electives. For more information about this process, refer to the New Homeschoolers page on this web site.
